A unique piece of furniture that tells You...

Decorative Arts have been my passion for more than two decades since I transformed my first pieces of furniture. These were salvaged from family furniture, in good condition but with an outdated look. Since then, I can't help being amazed by the immense scope of possibilities offered by the re-design and transformation of furniture.

Like many, I once bought mass-market furniture. However its average quality ,limited lifespan and the sad feeling you get when it gives your house a sanitized style identical everywhere, led me to return to my first love: I've always loved to go looking for beautiful second-hand furniture, restoring - transforming and personalizing it, so that it becomes a central piece of interior decoration, both functional and long lasting. In addition, I also create numerous decorative items and accessories, utterly designed and handcrafted in my workshop.

The wealth of experience that I gained during my former professional career, both technical and artistic, allows me to today turn this passion into a real profession. My life journey and time spent in different countries, offers me a broad vision of possible decoration styles that I share with my customers.

For this reason, I created 9 AD VITAM, wishing to work both in an eco-responsible approach - (not throwing away beautiful quality furniture, not letting know-how be lost) - and with a deep desire of offering everyone an interior that suits them and in which they feel cosy and at home.

Our way of working

As it is true that every piece of furniture to be re-designed requires a specific approach, here is a little overview of the classic path of a piece of furniture to be redesigned

Step 1: Finding the perfect furniture

Here it is about finding a piece of furniture, preferably in good condition, or even excellent condition, with recognized manufacturing quality (solid wood for example) and interesting shapes to use. This one can be found at second hand shops or can come from family inheritance.

Occasionally, it also happens that we work on a new piece, sometimes even in engineered wood, but only if the piece has an undeniable interest in terms of shape and offers a good production quality. The general spirit of our approach, however, remains the makeover of beautiful second-hand furniture, with a view to Upcycling.

Step 2: Preparing the furniture

It’s about making the piece of furniture ready to be transformed.

It is therefore necessary to clean it thoroughly, sand or strip it, fill in the holes, then repair the cracks and other possible small damages.

Step 3: Beginning the restoration or makeover work

Depending on the project which will have been defined beforehand with the customer (or on the inspiration of 9 AD VITAM, for the furniture that we offer later for sale) but also depending on the specificities of each piece of furniture, we will decide whether or not applying an undercoat before painting several layers with the dominant base colour.

Please note: 9 AD VITAM uses exclusively ecological paints that are as healthy as possible. We favor a VOC-free mineral paint, which offers excellent coverage, does not systematically require an undercoat and offers excellent resistance after complete drying. We also use chalk paints and milk paints, the latter based on the same manufacturing recipes as the paints of the 16th-17th century.

Once the base is colored in the exact desired shade of colour, we carry out the various decorative works: stencil patterns, application of tailor-made onlays made by us, cutting technique, special fabrics for furniture etc... according to the specifications. predefined loads.

Step 4: Finishing the piece properly

Once the decorative phase is completed, the work is left to dry for several days, on the one hand to allow the layers of paint to harden properly, and on the other hand to allow the different pieces of the ornaments to become one with the support.

Then, waxes and patinas are used to finish the furniture. The different patinas will give a shabby Chic, aged look or any other wanted effect. This is also the moment when we will apply, for example, gold leaf gilding if it has been specified in the project.

Finally, once these whole steps are completed, the last one will consist into applying a protective wax (9 AD VITAM uses natural waxes based on beeswax) and/or possibly a varnish if it is specifically required.

The entire process requires a minimum of three to four weeks of manufacturing time before shipping or returning the furniture to the customer. This time is an absolute necessity so that all the work carried out on the furniture is well fixed and that it can be transported again.

The atmosphere of a house would not be complete without these few objects which add softness, warmth... without forgetting a certain charm.

At 9 AD VITAM, we also create, always in an artisanal way, various accessories and decorative objects: lamps, hooks, vases, pocket trays but also themed decorations ('couple' mini statues, cats, etc.), and also a few models of candles. Every piece is entirely handcrafted in our workshop, which makes each object absolutely unique and exclusive.

We always choose to use noble and raw components such as wood and concrete, to name a few, as well as ecological paints.
